Dark Chocolate Relaxes Blood Vessels
Eating dark chocolate can make blood vessels more flexible, basically boosting the function of vital endothelial cells that line the inside of blood vessels, a recent U.S. study suggests.
Cocoa is rich in a group of antioxidant compounds called flavonoids, which are also found in fruits and vegetables, wine and green tea. Research suggests that consumption of foods rich in flavonoids may decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease.
The study, conducted by researchers at the Yale Prevention Research Center in Connecticut, included 45 healthy people with a body mass index (BMI) between 25 and 35. BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. A BMI reading of 25-29.9 is an indicator of overweight, while a reading of 30 or more indicates obesity.
The participants were divided into three groups that ate either eight ounces of cocoa without sugar, cocoa with sugar, or a placebo. For six weeks, the participants underwent endothelial function testing. This was done by using high frequency ultrasound to measure the ability of the brachial artery (which runs from the shoulder to the elbow) to relax and expand in order to accommodate increased blood flow. This test is called flow mediated dilation (FMD).
The study found that FMD scores improved 2.4 percent in the group that consumed cocoa with no sugar, compared with 1.5 percent in the group that ate cocoa with sugar. There was a 0.8 percent decrease in FMD in the group that ate the placebo.
"In this group of healthy adults with BMI between 25 and 35, dark chocolate ingestion over a short period of time was shown to significantly improve endothelial function, leading our team to believe that greater benefit may be seen through a long-term, randomized clinical trial," said co-author Dr. Valentine Yanchou Njike.
"While the findings from this study do not suggest that people should start eating more chocolate as part of their daily routine, it does suggest that we pay more attention to how dark chocolate and other flavonoid-rich foods might offer cardiovascular benefits," Njike said.

Cowboy Western Wear
When I grew up, cowboy western wear was the stuff of costume parties and Halloween. Lake Tahoe Skiing

Pirate Hat
One of my favorite pictures of my daughter is one where she is wearing a pirate hat. She was getting ready to see the Wiggles, and she wanted to wear a hat just like Captain Feathersword. It was much too big for her, but she didn’t care. She loved that hat and the eye patch that I bought to go with it. She didn’t wear the eye patch to the show because she couldn’t see well, but she thought it was just fine as long as she had it with her.
For some reason, children seem to love the idea of a pirate, though they really don’t know what being a real pirate means. To children, they are just fun guys in a pirate hat, and that means they are likeable characters for some reason. If you watch children’s shows, you will notice that the pirate hat is seen in many of them, but the pirates are nice, and even a lot of fun. Children also seem to have a fascination with dinosaurs and other animals, and they make up a lot of children’s show characters as well.
Pirates have been romanticized over time, though I am sure those who saw a pirate hat back when pirates were common weren’t very excited. Pirates were never nice, and often, the sight of them could mean that your ship was doomed and even that your life was at any end. I can only imagine that those who lived back then would be shocked to see children and adults alike walking around in a pirate hat and no one seeming to think a thing of it. They would probably think that surely the world has gone mad to think a person of such character is worth celebrating.
When looking for a pirate hat, it might be harder to find one to fit a child than an adult, but they are out there. You can find them rather cheaply if you look for a pirate hat made of felt. There are more expensive types that are made of leather or vinyl, but you may have to shop online to find the good ones. A leather hat would look more authentic when concocting a pirate costume. Runny Nose
If there is one thing I cannot stand it is a runny nose. I know it’s silly, but when I see a kid with snot coming out of their nose, I have to leave the room. If they have some lovely shade of green hanging down, I have to leave or else throw up. I don’t know why it bothers me so much but it does, and to this day I thank God every single day that my daughter rarely had a runny nose, and when she does, it is something that I of which I can easily deal. Otherwise, I wouldn’t make it through motherhood.
I have one not so fond memory of college. My roommate had a young boy. He rarely had runny nose, but when he did it was horrible. She was good about keeping him cleaned up and such, but there were moments when it understandably would get out of hand. One night he came out from bed with his runny nose and suddenly there was a bubble. She calmly wiped it up while still munching on her slice of pizza. I had to go into the bathroom and throw up. She teased me a lot after that, telling me I was going to have problems with motherhood.
At any rate, I certainly don’t hold anyone’s runny nose against them; I just can’t deal with it. For many kids, it is a fact of life. Younger children don’t know how to wipe their noses yet, and moms certainly can’t get to it every second of the day. That is why even though I don’t like to medicate children when they don’t need it, I will give my daughter cold medicine. Not only does it stop her from suffering from the symptoms of a cold, it saves me from losing my lunch every five minutes.
If your child seems to have a runny nose a lot, you should consider that they may be having sinus problems and you should talk to your doctor about it. Street Children
Poverty will probably always be an issue in the United States and around the globe. Although it breaks our hearts to see homeless people and street children, many of us do virtually nothing to stop of better the situation. I especially blame the ridiculously wealthy individuals, who clearly have billions to spare. What are they doing with all that cash? Half of them didn't even earn it. It was an inheritance of "old money" passed on from generation to generation. This reminds me of the sad truth that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. However, it's not just about wealth. There are other reasons why unfortunate ones roam the streets in search of food and shelter. Often the problem begins at home.
One of the primary reasons you'll encounter or spot street children in America relates back to the family they once knew or never had. This can go a few different ways. Sometimes children are abandoned at birth, and sadly bounce from bad foster home to worse foster home. I hate to admit it, but it's crystal clear that many foster parents SUCK. They take in children simply to receive aid from the government. How low can someone stoop? Apparently to the level of a slithering snake. Needless to say, many of these kids become street children simply to escape their bad "home" atmosphere. Then there are the street children, who originally had a family. Maybe there were two parents and a few siblings in the picture, but physical or sexual abuse drove them to a life of fending for themselves on the mean streets of America. This is a very sad story, but one shared by more youths than you'd care to imagine. Even in small towns you can spot a few street children who've suffered terribly.
One thing I can say about our great nation is that it doesn't even vie with what goes on in the Middle East. After my brother came back from a year in Afghanistan and Iraq, he had plenty of dismal stories to tell. The worst concerned the street children of these countries. He stated that many of the small children in Afghanistan are pushed out on the streets. Afghanistan soldiers casually pass them by, hurling stones and crushing the helpless children to the ground. Just when I thought our country had issues concerning street children, it hardly compares to this nightmare.

The Hobbit Audio Book
When I was a kid, I used to love to have my parents Read books by J.R.R. Tolkien to me. I loved The Lord of the Rings, the Silmarillion, and all of the rest. My favorite one, however, was The Hobbit. I would never get tired of that story. There was something so classic about it, so fairytale like. Beyond that, it was just the right length. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was over a thousands pages, but The Hobbit was long enough to feel epic but not long enough to take a year to read at bedtime.
Ever since growing up, I have felt nostalgic for the age of bedtime stories. I have had many downloadable audio books, but none of them have quite done it for me before. Then I found a copy of The Hobbit audio book, and I loved it. The narrator had a great voice and read it at just the right speed to keep it moving along without rushing. Tolkien has been coming back into style lately, and I was afraid that they would mess it up. With all of the Peter Jackson hobbit hype, I thought that the spirit of Tolkien would be lost. That hasn't been the case at all. The Hobbit audio book has been a truly astounding listen.
I have actually enjoyed hearing The Hobbit audio book so much that I have been thinking about buying some other recordings of books by Tolkien. I know that there are Lord of the Rings audio books out there, and I can't wait to hear them. The problem is that so many people have recorded the Lord of the Rings that it might be kind of hard to pick out the one that I want to hear. How do you know ahead of time who does the best reading? I really wish that there was a resource for reviewing audio books online. I was fortunate enough to get a great copy of The Hobbit audio book, but I wouldn't want to take another risk if I could avoid it. I could get a terrible reading this time.
If you have the luxury of hearing someone else read The Hobbit to you, I highly suggest doing it. If you can't, however, buying the audio book Hobbit is a great second best. The Hobbit audio book is even better than reading it to yourself because it lets you have the childhood experience of being read to a little bit.

I always thought that I was pretty good at finding travel deals. I would always start looking for cheap international flights months and months before my trip, and would usually be able to save hundreds of dollars through careful planning and patience. I would find fairly cheap hotels in general, staying at cheaper places rather than throwing money around on pointless luxury. When I decided to go a trip with my cousin, however, I was in for a surprise. Apparently, I knew nothing about travel discount hunting.
My cousin, you see, could take finding travel discounts to extremes. Discount traveling, in fact, was somewhat of a religion for him. He was one of the only people I knew who still consulted a travel agent, however he rarely actually accepted the travel hotel packages that the agent proposed. He could usually find something better on his own, you see. He explained to me that it wasn't just an obsession. He used to be a traveling salesman, working on commission. The more that he could save on traveling expenses, the more money he had at the end of the day. Finding travel discounts just made good business sense for him, so he eventually got very good at it.
The key to finding good travel discounts is to keep an eye out for special promotions. Cheap tickets online sites are great, but they are only the beginning. A lot of the time, the credit card companies will offer a great travel discount to someone who is willing to specifically endorse their card. At some sites, Anyone who uses MasterCard gets travel discounts of up to 20% off. On other sites, the preferred card is Visa. Sometimes, hotels or travel agencies will give away huge travel discounts if you are willing to make your trip in the off season. The more flexible you are, the more opportunities there are.

Unique Baby Names
When I complain about my name no one understands. You see, no one can find anything objectionable about the name David. There have been many famous Davids, both good and bad. Nowadays, there are still many famous Davids. David is a completely neutral name in every way. That is why it drives me crazy! It is completely colorless in bland, and I hate it. Now that I am an expectant father, I want to give my child treat. I want my child to have a name that helps him or her to stand out from the crowd. I have been looking at all of the unique baby names that I can find. By the time my kid is born, I will have found one of the top 100 names of all time.
Of course, it is easy to overdo it with the unique baby name, as many children of celebrities will tell you. Asked Dweezil Zappa how he feels about his name. What about Moonbeam? It is possible that they like their unique baby names, but then again, it is possible that they hate them. Everyone remembers the lessons of the Johnny Cash song “Boy Named Sue”. A parent may have a very good reason behind a unique baby name, but that does not mean that the child will love it. Unique baby names are a double-edged sword.
I think that the key is to find a baby name unique enough to help the child stand out and seem special, but not strange enough that other kids make fun of him. Some unique baby names are truly atrocious. I think that there are some parents who have a very sadistic sense of humor, and give their children unique baby names that they know they will hate. It is a way of having power over the children, and the kid can't do anything about it until he or she turns 18.
Unique baby names should not come between a parent and a child. I have decided that if I give my child a unique baby name and he or she does not like it, they will be free to change their name. It doesn't matter what age they are, I believe in the right to be referred to by whatever name you want. I may love the unique baby names, but it is not my opinion that matters the most. Vancouver Events
Vancouver is one of the most cultured and exciting cities in the world and Vancouver events offer something for everyone. It is a city that is very successful in sharing different cultures and bringing people together. One of the highlights is the Alcan Dragon Boat Festival in the False Creek district. The parade, which ends at Ross Street Temple, is led by people in traditional costume and there is dancing and chanting to the lively Bhangra music. Refreshments are available at various food stalls. Shakespeare plays and the beach is an unusual combination but Bard on the Beach is one of the best supported of the Vancouver events. A professional theatre company performs four different productions on the waterfront at Vanier Park. This backdrop is quite stunning with the mountains and the city skyline in the background.

Vitamin Benefits
All of us want to be healthy, and as we get older, we become more and more concerned with it. When we're young, we take a lot of risks. Many people eat unhealthy foods, don't exercise sufficiently, drink to excess, and engage in other activities that put strain on the body. As we get older, we try to make up for our youthful excesses. We read all the labels on all of the vitamin supplements, looking for how they will help us take care of our health.
There are different vitamin benefits listed for each ingredients, as if by taking a specific vitamin, you can improve a specific aspect of your sat health. Vitamin B6 benefits, for example, include improved nervous functioning and decreased stress. Vitamin C benefits the immune system and cuts down on free radicals, helping you avoid cancer. And so on. But how much does the vitamin benefit health in reality?
The problem is that there is no incentive to research vitamin benefits in this country. You see, because anyone can sell vitamin supplements, no one owns them. If a company pays to research the benefits of a particular vitamin, that research can be used by anyone. Because of this, we mostly have to rely on anecdotal evidence of vitamin benefits.
I can't speak scientifically on the subject, but in my experience there seem to be great vitamin benefits from taking high quality supplements. Since I developed some serious health concerns a few years ago, I have been on a daily course of vitamins and minerals under the advice of my medical practitioner. I don't know how much was from the vitamins and how much was from changes in my diet and lifestyle, but whatever the cause, my health has gotten much better. The vitamins have played at least some role in that.

Washing Machines
Just when you think that things are as good as they can get, someone comes along and makes an improvement that makes life a bit easier. One thing that always remained the same during my lifetime were washing machines. They always did the same things, and most of them did it well. We often don’t think about what could be better unless we really think about how difficult some aspects can be. It takes someone with imagination and the will to change something to come up with great improvements.
I saw a commercial recently for washing machines. I noticed that someone had improved them in a way that will probably be loved by many. These washing machines could steam something for a few minutes to remove wrinkles and freshen the garment. I thought that was a great idea. Too often we have to change because something is wrinkled or we think we need something fresh for a night out. This means more laundry being done than we really need. The ability to freshen a garment without washing it is incredible to me.
Washing machines have also changed in a way that means people can do less laundry. I can’t think of anyone who loves to do load after load, though it is one of the easier household chores. Each load uses water and detergent, and some think it is a waste to do so much. Some newer machines have the capacity to do more in each load, and the clothes come out just as clean, if not cleaner, than the washing machines that we are use to using. They have found space for more clothes without compromising outcome.
If you are looking at some of the newer types of washing machines on the market, don’t be afraid to ask questions. In fact, you would be silly not to do so. As with anything new, there can be problems and glitches with new models. Ask the salesperson to help you find what you want, and then ask them what they know about the models they are showing you. It also wouldn’t hurt to look online for reviews and information. Sometimes it is worth it to wait a year on a new idea so the kinks can be worked out before you buy. If you think you really can’t wait, and you want to buy now, go with a brand you trust. New technology is always a little tricky, but you won’t have to worry as much if you buy from a company you have trusted in the past.

Water Toys
There is nothing that will contribute to summer fun, particularly among kids, like water toys. Whether you are using water pool toys, squirt guns, or lawn water features, playing with water is one of the greatest joys of childhood. When I was a kid, we used to keep it simple. We would just run around in the sprinkler all day. My parents had a very big lawn to take care of, and they were constantly watering it. As such, the sprinkler always made for a convenient water toy. They didn't really want us to have squirt guns, but we would always find a way of saving up money on our own and going out and picking one up. We would have squirt gun fights, or just through glasses of water at each other. Sometimes, we would take the sprinkler off of the hose and squirt each other. Whoever got the hose always won the water fight.
Nowadays, water toys are much more complicated than they were when I was a kid. As a matter of fact, my kids have some of the coolest water toys that I have ever seen. We have an outdoor pool in the backyard, so as you can imagine there's plenty of opportunity to play in the water. My toddler has, of course, water baby toys. For little kids, water wings are not just a toy – they are a necessity for swimming. They require constant supervision, as they can fail when you least expect it, but they are still great for giving kids freedom to move around in the water.
My older kids use different kinds of water toys. They like water noodles, inflatable mattresses, and paddle boards. They love to paddle up to each other, holding onto inflatable toys, and try to knock each other over. Although every once in a while this play gets rough, usually it is mostly harmless.
In spite of the aboveground pool, one of the most popular water toys at my house is the Slip and Slide. Although these toys have changed a lot since I was a child, the essential principle is the same. It is a big mat, covered with water, down which kids can slide. It is a wild ride, sort of like having a water slide but on flat land. You have to set them up carefully, however. If you don't make sure that there's nothing sharp on the lawn, kids can get cut on it. Nothing will ruin your day like that!

Wedding Toasts
One of the greatest curses you can have is to be able to use a skill for everyone but yourself. I am like that with communication. I can write wonderfully, and I can tell people just what to say in any situation. Many people come to me for advice, and by the words of wisdom I give them, you would think that I could be a famous orator. Nonetheless, in public speaking engagements, I am absolutely useless. I am less than useless. I am a buffoon.
That is why, when I was asked to give the best man wedding toast at my cousin's wedding, I was so terrified. I have feared public speaking event of all kinds for a long time, but wedding toasts are one of the worst. If you are giving a public presentation at a business meeting, for example, you can always console yourself with the fact you don't really like your coworkers. If you are giving a report at school, you can always try to come up with an extra credit project to prove that, despite the fact that you can not communicate in public, you still know what you're talking about. With wedding toasts, however, you are on your own. You are standing up in front of a group of assembled friends and family, and you had better not mess up.
As a classicist, my first thought was to look at famous wedding toasts. These things are relatively easy to find. There are many self-styled toastmasters around nowadays, people who pride themselves on having an old-fashioned faculty with words and a fluidity at public speaking events. Nonetheless, all of these toasts look stilted. They are either too old or too specific. I looked at many of the programs out there to generate public speeches, and had the opposite impression. They were too broad and vague. A toast has to be specific, catered to the subject, or else it fails. No one can write wedding toasts for you but you yourself.
Finally, I stop quaking, and sat down to write it. It took me hours, but I was finally finished. Then came the part I dreaded – the practicing. I was up all night the night before the wedding, and when I got there I looked haggard. Nevertheless, the speech went off brilliantly. I figure it was the combination of exhaustion and anxiety that worked for me. I was so keyed up about it that I couldn't mess up.

Womens Dresses
If you look at popular stereotypes of men, you would think that all of us are completely crazy about women's dresses, lingerie, and underthings. After all, isn't that how we are marketed to? Commercials for men feature scantily clad women, big cars, and beer – although not always in that order. Nevertheless, a lot of us don't really fit into the stereotype at all. As a matter of fact, I didn't care one bit about women's clothing until my present relationship. I knew enough to compliment a my girlfriend on her dress, but it was all the same to me. Womens dresses, shirts, blue jeans – I didn't really care what she was wearing as long as she was with me.
Most of my girlfriends really appreciated my view of women's apparel. After all, no one wants to feel stressed out about how they look all the time. It is nice to be dating someone who thinks you are good looking no matter what you are wearing, even if you just got out of bed. My current girlfriend, however, is something different. To tell you truth, she is somewhat high maintenance. If she has bought a new womens dress, I had better like it. My previous girlfriends would put up with me pretending to like the womens dresses that they bought. Some of them could see through it and some of them couldn't, but all that really mattered was that I found them beautiful. For the first time, however, I am expected to take an active interest in my girlfriends clothes.
Like all boyfriends, I have been dragged along to women's clothing stores from time to time, but usually in the past, the trips were few and far between. I would not make my girlfriends go discount clothes shopping with me, and they would not make me go fashion clothing shopping with them. My current girlfriend, however, insists on trying on all of her womens dresses for me. At first, I thought it was low self-esteem, but I realize now that it is something else. You see, she really feels attractive in well-made womens dresses, and she wants me to feel that she is attractive in them. More than that, she wants me to develop some taste in close myself. She figures that if I have to come with her shopping for womens dresses, I will eventually become more interested in men's clothes as well. To tell you the truth, it has worked a bit. I take more care with my clothes than I used to.

Workout DVD
One of the best ways to get a good workout when you think you don’t have time to go to the gym is to get a workout DVD you can do in your home. You may think that you don’t want to go to the gym because you feel too large, or perhaps it takes you too long to get there and back. If this is something you are thinking, make sure that is a real issue and not just a cop out. If you really want the workout but can’t get to the gym, a great workout DVD is just what you need.
When you are choosing a workout DVD, you have to consider what it is you like to do. If you choose something that you are going to get bored with rather quickly, you are going to end up stopping your workouts due to boredom. I once had a Body of Steel workout DVD and I stopped using it because I couldn’t stand it another moment. You really have to find something that works for you, and remember that perhaps you should change what DVD you use on occasion to stop yourself from getting bored of the same workout day after day.
If you have friends that are also using a workout DVD, you might want to work out together. If you don’t feel comfortable with this, you might have another option. You can still workout on your own, but you can take walks with each other a few times a week. You can add extra workout time to your weekly schedule this way, and you can find a way to spend time with each other while doing so. You may want to do a workout DVD swap with a few of these friends so you can all switch up your routines.

Write Ebooks
Many people read books, but many fewer write books. Is this because writing is a gift belonging to only a few individuals? Sure, there are great writers who do have a special gift with words. Ernest Hemingway. Thomas Wolfe. Then again, it's often said, everyone has a book inside them. Sometimes it takes a while, perhaps most of adulthood, before their book burbles to the surface of consciousness as a viable idea. If you want to write books, or just one, all you have to do is start writing.
Sounds too simple, you say. Surely there's more to it than that. Well, yes and no. If you have the desire to write books, you're halfway there. Passion is required. Then you need your subject.
Over the span of your lifetime, there are surely several subjects which have fascinated you and about which you've gained some knowledge. Maybe you were brought up with lots of family pets, learning how to care for them and picking up old time cures from Grandma, continuing your interest into adulthood and your own kid's pets. You may not know it, but there are a lot of people out there who would love to learn from you. There's a good reason to write books.
Hobbies that span a lifetime are often good non-fiction candidates. If you grew up in the country, going on annual mushroom hunts with your family, you had hands-on experience, learning every little thing about recognizing the edible from the poisonous, environments of different mushrooms and where that secret place can be found, abundant with mushrooms every fall. There you go. Another excuse to write books.
Many Moms are talented storytellers, enchanting generations of children with their original tales which keep the kids on the edge of their seats at every telling. If this is you, you should write books for children. Children's books are a huge market in publishing.

There are talented editors who can help you organize your material and edit your work. You can also hire a ghostwriter, who can put your thoughts to words, in your “voice”. You may even know someone who does write and would volunteer their services to get you going.
If you have passion and a subject, you can find a way to get it done. Writing is a satisfying, therapeutic occupation. If you want to write books, all you need to do is start writing. Work every day and before you know it, you'll have a completed book. Good Luck to you!
